Google has emerged as one of the great titans of the Internet. The company does not earn as much as a country – it earns more. The 29 poorest countries in the world must combine their revenue in 2010 to equal the 29.3 billion dollars that Google earned from advertising that year. Almost all of Google’s revenue is derived from advertising. Only 3 percent of Google’s 2010 revenue came from sources other than advertising. Mobile advertising alone generated 2.5 billion dollars for the company.
The scale of Google’s Internet activities is truly incredible. In one month, the total amount of time people spend using Google or its various websites is over 380 million years. That’s older than the dinosaurs.
Google advertises some products that may be illegal. For example, the company previously allowed Canadian pharmacies to advertise their prescription drugs to American customers. The American government did not like this, fining the company 500 million dollars in 2010.
